About the Artist

As a young boy in his native
Thailand, Yai loved to watch a local
artist working in the open air market.
Yai wanted to learn to create art.
He approached the artist and ask
him if he too could learn to create
beautiful art. The artist replied,
“Yes, Practice.”
For Over 20 years Yai has been
practicing his craft. He started by
copying cartoon characters and
showing them to the artist.
“Is it good?" He would ask.
More often than not the answer was
“No, it is not good. Keep practicing.”
But occasionally the answer would
be something different such as
“You should practice drawing dogs.”
And later,
“You should practice drawing people.”
For some people the constant lack of
enthusiasm for his work would have
caused them to quit. Yai took it as a
challenge.
Continuing a discipline he developed
as a child and a love for art, Yai works
on his art every day. If he is not lovingly
creating a custom portrait for a client he
is “practicing” by creating a new work
which inspires his creativity.
Yai's Technique
Yai uses finely ground charcoal
powder and Chinese brushes to
create his work. It is
a process of
'painting' the dry carbon powder
onto high quality
archival paper.
Using this method, Yai is able to
achieve striking
detail and a subtle
finish in his portraits.
Through the years Yai has
experimented with
over a hundred
different papers and has found what
he
considers the perfect paper for his
technique. It has enough texture to
hold the charcoal yet is smooth enough
to allow for delicate
smoothness.
